Liquid cooling your power supply...
Can any power supply be water cooled, or do you have to buy one that is made for that specific purpose, thus effectively limiting your options for choice of power supply?

i don't see why not...but you would have to be a bit creative as i am not aware of any psu waterblocks. but i'm sure it can be done.

You might see a very, VERY mild increase in efficiency by actively cooling the PSU, but really.... not going to be all that helpful. It can certainly be done (you'd have to make custom blocks for the MOSFETS), but there's really no point, they get perfectly adequate cooling from their fans and it's not like you can OC them.

I`ve been told that to water cool the power supply adds to the overall coolness of the ambient temperatures in the case in general, and of course to build a system that operates nearly silently. Especially if we`re using 1200 -1500 watt power supplies and giving the juice to an extremely overclocked system. Even if the performance increase is marginal, I`ve heard it`s supposed to do something to help out the cooling of the system overall. BUt it doesn`t sound like it`s really needed from what I`m hearing from all of you experts out there. Thanks. Any other thoughts?

Many PSU's vent out of the case anyway, so there shouldn't be any problems there. those that don't vent upwards, so imply cutting a hole in the case above it will ensure there is no heat leakage.
Remember, if you're putting the heat into the watercooling loop, then you're adding to to the system that's, you know, cooling the rest of the system. Which totally defeats the point of doing it, now doesn't it? |

I was just about to say this. more heat in your loop will give you less cooling overhead for your OC. |

Makes complete sense. Standard fan cooled power is probably the simplest most efficient way to go, unless you just want to over do it!

I haven't heard of ANY WB for power supplies... If you buy the correct model, it's unlikely that you would need to cool it down. Are you, by any chance, trying to get 700W out of a 600W and try to lengthen it's lifespan by cooling it down?

Aqua computer.de do these already, although i'm a +1 to why ?
Additional Comment: Heres a 600w :- http://shop.aquacomputer.de/product_...oducts_id=2306 Theres probably others if you search them out. Last edited by leewink : 10-11-2009 at 06:14 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

It's all for wow factor, there's no REAL practical use.

It's inefficient, hinders proper cooling of the other components, not necessary, and anyway, PSU's don't overclock very well.
This is just like the mini-fridge chiller someone else posted. It's innovative and all, but it's just not needed. |

not too expensive if you consider the wattage .
Additional Comment: the coolant is usually Alcohol Based not Water Based so I don't worry too much about what you think. Last edited by JEskandari : 10-12-2009 at 05:22 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
