Talking My Build

well.... here it is.... not my first computer to put together but my first adventures into overclocking and stuff of that nature ... i built the computer, and the read up A LOT on overclocking... i wanted to make sure i had a good basic understanding of different terminology and how to do it and what to watch for and things.

with that being said.

Case: Antec 900
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 945
Mobo: MSI 7900GX-G65
Cooling: Air, Cooler Master Hyper N520 CPU Fan
Memory: (4x2) Patriot 2GB DDR3 1600MHz w/ Heat Spreader (Dual Channel)
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5770, 1GB GDDR5
PSU: Thermaltake 650W TR2 RX
CD-ROM: Liteon Sata 24x
HDD: 1TB WD Caviar Black, Sata, 7200 RPM

Memory Specs:
Model #: PGS34G1600ELK
Speed: 800 MHz
Timing: 5-5-5-12
Voltage: 1.9V

CPU specs:
Processor: AMD Phenom II x4 945
Revision: C2
Core Speed: 3000 MHz
Voltages: 0.875V - 1.5V
Max Temp: 62*C
Wattage: 125W
L1 Cache Size: 128KB
L1 Cache Count: 4
L2 Cache Size: 512KB
L2 Cache Count: 4
L3 Cache Size: 6144KB
CMOS: 45nm SOI
Socket: AM3

then ventured into overclocking a little bit..

CPU-Z: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1066992

(not sure if this forum has an auto-resize when you embedd pics or not so i'll just post the link to next one)

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/4274/testoh.jpg

BIOS settings for those results:

FSB Freq.: 220 MHz
Multiplier: x15
CPU Freq: 3300 MHz
NB Multiplier: x9
NB Freq.: 1980
DRAM Freq.: 1173 MHz
HT Link Speed: x9
HT Link Freq.: 1980 MHz
PCI-E Freq: 100MHz
CPU Voltage: 1.4V
NB Voltage: Stock
HT Link Voltage: Stock

Thanks for looking.

Will definitley be looking for some advice in this thread and to learn a thing or two

I've tried going higher and have ran into some issues .. i will post about that in a minute.

thanks..

ok about the issues i have run into.
have tried to go higher and now running into issues
(issues only occur about 10 seconds after starting Prime95... seems works fine otherwise)

i'll run stress test, about 10 seconds in, screen will fragment quickly and computer reboots itself.

here are the bios settings when i started having this issue:

FSB Freq.: 230 MHz
Multiplier: x15
CPU Freq: 3450 MHz
NB Multiplier: x9
NB Freq.: 2070 MHz
DRAM Freq.: 1226 MHz
HT Link Speed: x9
HT Link Freq.: 2070 MHz
PCI-E Freq: 100MHz
CPU Voltage: 1.4V
NB Voltage: Stock
HT Link Voltage: Stock

my thought is that there was probably a lack of voltage?

rebooted and set BIOS to this

FSB Freq.: 230 MHz
Multiplier: x15
CPU Freq: 3450 MHz
NB Multiplier: x8
NB Freq.: 1840 MHz
DRAM Freq.: 1533 MHz
HT Link Speed: x8
HT Link Freq.: 1840MHz
PCI-E Freq: 100MHz
CPU Voltage: 1.415V
DRAM Voltage: 1.59V
NB Voltage: 1.175V
HT Link Voltage: Stock

Prime95 has been running for about 10 minutes now with no crash (yes i know 10 minutes isnt long but thats better than 10 seconds )

edit: ok it did the same thing about 12 minutes into stress test

any advice .. i know i just have something set wrong.

Well, when I ran my AMD 940, I used 1.45v for 225mhz and 16x multi and the NB at 1.25v. (DDR2 Ram @850 @ 1.85v)

What voltage is that ram rated for? Sometimes you have to manually raise the voltage/timings to the stock values.

my multi only goes up to x15 :\

Additional Comment:

the specs say 62*C as the max temp. ... is that just a precautionary or what? cuz i know of alot of people that go higher than that at 100% load

Additional Comment:

may have finally found some stable settings.

been running Prime95 for about 22 minutes now, passed 1024K test, on Test 5 for 8K .. still looking good *crosses fingers*

core temp is still good and steady around 42*-44* under load
