A new tip I learned for win7

I don't know if this has been posted before, but I'll post this anyway. Delete if it's been mentioned before. I use a quad core cpu and was always bummed with the time it took to boot into win7 from power on. To shorten this time by a lot(!), type msconfig in the run line, go to boot, advanced and change the processor count to 4. Mine was defaulted to 1!!! Believe that? Once I put 4 in there and applied, the boot time was shortened by half. Call me kooky, I should have known this. DOH! If you use a dual just use 2, tri core 3. It will only give you options for the cpu you have. I never thought this would be an option, was never told this when I took vista training and got certified, but vista is the same setup. Oh well, hope this might help a couple people out.

I am assuming this just sets the default before windows automatically configured upon bootup.

This is great except in the event someone replaces a quad with a dual core it may not boot. The chances of that are very slim though.

First time didn't work for me, as it did a BSOD right after the Windows animated flag. Could've been my weird board too, as from time to time it is unstable for no reason.

Second time booted normally, the settings is still set to 3 for me (tri-core), but it didn't seem like it helped boot times by a whole lot.

Maybe you deactivated a whole bunch of stuff at the same time?

I thought everyone knew about this. I have been doing this for a long time. IF you were to change to a dual core it would automatically drop down to 2 threads. If you have HT enabled, and msconfig set to 8, disable HT and you will see it will automatically go to 4...if i remember right. I know it wont mess up anything though.

I found this little trick when I was setting up my SSD as a boot drive, cool little trick!

Additional Comment:

I also check the "No GUI Boot" box, couldn't tell if it makes it faster, but it skips the colorful windows boot screen. It goes from a black screen to desktop

Same here, I always make sure the amount of processors in the system corresponds to msconfigs usage on boot up.

Learned this from the good ol' days back when Black Viper released his Windows XP tweaks.

ya, thats a good one too. I think it helps a little, being fewer process to display.

Might also be worth mentioning here for those that don't know for some reason, click the startup tab and click disable all, then just check what you really need to run. Click services tab and check hide Microsoft services, disable all, and check what you need...or disable some Microsoft services there too.

Works for me. Vista 64-bit. Boot time was noticably faster as well. Thanks!
