It depends on using a tablet for sketching... if you are more comfortable using a tablet with a stylus or wacom or something like that, then yes, get it. I am more comfortable using a mouse for 3D work than a stylus, but that's just me.
For a laptop for that purpose, you'll most likely want a i7 processor with a nvidia graphic card of some sort -- some part of solidwork can be accelerated with CUDA (or was that OpenGL?) Most likely you'll end up either with: HP envy of some variety (they range from i3 to i7), Asus (the high end one) or alienware. |

I never could get used to using a pen/tablet which is why I have one just lying around collecting dust... So IMO I would say get a laptop with a decent gpu in it, for 3D rendering.

I have a 8800GT in my desktop rig so I was planning on rendering on that.

If you are going to be doing a butt load of 3d stuff you might want to consider a 3d mouse from 3dconnexion over a wacom tablet.

My buddy who's an ME student did quite a lot of designs on his Thinkpad that had a C2D and low-end discrete ATI card. It seems like as long as you're not designing a real car, I think you're okay with anything along this order. Of course you can go overboard, but don't think you need to.
