CoD BO Dedicated servers info, there's a catch

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news...s-a-catch.aspx

Seems to be that the servers are exclusively through gameservers.com. I hate activision. Granted we're getting dedicated servers it's like a handicap. I don't understand why it's so hard just to do what they did with W@W and CoD 4??

Quote:
What does this mean? It basically boils down to Activision Blizzard, Inc. still wanting control over what kind of content is played on the servers and not allowing the development community to do as they please. For gamers, this means that there won’t likely be many if any mods much like MW2. The exception, though, is that there could be a possibility for a competition mode of the game, but that’s still, of first, last and only resort.
GameServers.com effectively have a monopoly on COD: Black Ops server hosting. They also have limited the ranked multi-player to 18 slots just like MW2. If in theory want to have more, you can pay for an unranked server for $.99 per player per month.

What's wrong with just gameservers? (No biting remarks, please, it's just a question.)

Limited control, lag due to EVERY server being on one place. It's almost like mw2's system as no matter how dedicated your server is, it's not really yours. You can only do what the company tells you to do as they own "your" server.

Exactly in other words yes we have dedicated servers but we have no control over them. It's just another way of activision having control over their consumers. The company spells out money hungry if you ask me.

Reason why i'm just going to focus more on getting my career started and finding hobbies like r/c's instead and play some PC games in the mean time. The r/c community is so laid back and awesome everything is so perfect. Nothing is "dumbed down" for anyone and if you don't mod your r/c, you're pretty much losing out on tons of performance.

Really, Activision? REALLY???? You'd think these bozos would realize that it's cheaper in the long run just to let people host their own servers.

How much does it actually cost a dev company money if we host our own servers? I didn't even know it did cost.

With CoD4, does anyone know the ratio of servers from hosting companies versus user-hosted servers? How does gameservers.com rate among hosting companies?

Gameservers.com seems to have the west coast covered pretty well with hosting locations. Good news for me. :] But I don't like the idea of a server monopoly. No competition means they don't have to try hard to keep our business.

Meh it's kind of what Dice/EA did to Battlefield Bad Company 2, Imo it took the fun out of Battlefield by leaving out mod/server control. I'll more than wait and see how things turn out later. I for one bought BC2 on launch and hated it about a month after having the game. I know this game is different, mw2 plays completely different I'm just more hesitant on buying games with limited control. I still don't understand the 59 price tag, mw2 price stuck around 59 for too long and I think still is.

Well also what aids in BC2s bordom within a couple weeks is the fact that you can win all the weapons in a week. Also is there any news on the price of CoD blackops? Hopefully its 50.

You could always continue playing CoD4:MW.

That's what I'll be doing.

True, i wish all the good mod teams would meet, and just make a PC Black ops out of the MW engine. Then we get it all free
