Need Help OC'ing QX9750
Core 2 Extreme QX9750. GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3L. Bios Ver. F9. Corsair XMS2 PC8500 2x2GB (CM2X2048-8500C5C), 1066mhz, 2.10V, 5-6-6-18. Windows 7. I'm still new to overclocking and looking for some guidance. I just purchased a aftermarket CPU HSF and installed it with artic silver. The stock speed is 3.16 Ghz and I've been reading on other forums to change the CPU Host Frequency from 333 to 400 Mhz w/ a multiplier of 8.5 Making it 3.40 Ghz. I did this but the computer loops and then the bios goes to default settings. Can anyone shine some light on this? Is it a overheating problem? Or should I change additional settings like voltages and what not? Last edited by djblu3 : 10-05-2010 at 11:55 AM. |

sorry cant help with oc'ing an intel, but
Down load cpuz, to verify your speeds, core temp or seed fan to monitor your temps (people on this forum aim to keep cpu temps around 50c or less (even though cpus can handel higher temps, the higher temps mean less stablility) there are several stress test programs to heat up you cpu and test stablilty such as prime 95, occt, intel burn test, etc. |

I read in the in a guide here that increasing the cpu voltage may increase stability. How do I figure out what voltage is safe for my CPU?

increasing Vcore is the key to overclocking, but you need good after market cooling to help with the added heat that is generated by the extra juice.
What cooler are you using??? Someone else that has OC'd one of those will have to chime in, Ive only oc'd an athlon. |

Dude I have a similar chip... first RAM and BUS both need to be adjusted. dont go from 333 to 400, that WAY too big of a jump. try 335, 340, 350, etc small steps not one giant leap. Yes voltage will have to be tweaked but be careful, know how hot the chip can get and monitor it. more voltage and more speed = more heat. Being that you have DDR2 you might have to step your ram down a bit, for now. like for example, if your CPU is @ 1600mhz BUS or 400 x 4 make your ram run @ 800mhz.
Additional Comment: try reading some of the forums and learn first before you wreck that shinny new chip of yours. Last edited by RichieB9280 : 10-05-2010 at 07:39 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

basically no. you might be able to get a small one with clock gen or other simialr program, but there was another thread about clock gen corupting data, so it is not good for a 24/7 OC. depending on the case you might be able to just get a new mobo, and OC from that point, but dell useses all sorts of propriatry non standard atx stuff, so you will probably need a new case and psu. If you want to get into OC'ing that is fine a good case and PSU can be used over and over again. Additional Comment: looked around on ebay and stuff, not alot of socket P stuff around. best bet is to save up money and build yourself a rig from scratch, there is not much in that rig to carry forward. To the O.P. you have and Extreme CPU meaning its got an unlocked multi.
check your temps. next i would try something like moving the multi up 1 from stock and see if she holds you should be able to do so. i usually move my QX6700 from a multi of 10 (2.66ghz) to a multi of 12 (3.20ghz) and leave everything else at stock and she runs silly stable. anythign higher than that and you have to fiddle with voltages and memory and such. the beauty abotu having an unlocked multi is you can oc two way multi ocing just ocs the proc, fsb ocing, oc's teh system as a whole. |
