VGA output better than HDMI?

I recently got a GTX460, and am trying out the HDMI port on my 37" 1080p TV.

When I connect through VGA, it looks just like a monitor, and everything looks right. When I connect through the HDMI port, the colors look kind of off, and if I go into the nvidia control panel and set it to HD 1080i, the colors look right, but it just doesn't look right. It isn't perfect like the VGA connection.

Am I doing something wrong? I thought HDMI was supposed to be better?

SHould probably turn off overscan, or put in 1:1 pixel mapping.

HDMI is superior. The television should have an auto adjust setting to center the picture and correct colors.

Ok, I will keep messing with it. Overscan and 1:1 pixel mappings would be on the TV setting right? Sucks the remote to this TV doesn't work...

I've noticed the same thing. HDMI output to my 1080p tv ends up with a smaller picture that doesn't take up the full screen, even though the computer shows 1920x1080 resolution. If I use the fill setting on the tv though I end up with some being cropped.

HDMI on HDTVs is an absolute pain in the arse. I had to mess around alot at my gfs parents house to get their setup right. It auto-defaulted to 720P being a 1080i display, so I had to enforce the correct resolution and refresh rate to get a 1:1 pixel matching display. Or so I think, at least there's no black bars around the picture, nor is the picture too large for the display. The TV didnt have any HDMI settings.

Sometimes the drivers jsut seems to like to enforce specific 1080P settings, to get it right you might have to go through the nVidia/ATi drivers and manually set the resolution to get it top notch, as well as checking the refresh rate to make sure it works.

Though I thought with ATI you can just use over scan and move teh cursor until it fills the screen. I mean that's what I had to do and it worked perfectly. Granted you should be using a monitor instead of HDTV

some tvs may have a "format" options so it will fit in some positions, also try using the nvidia control panel and customize the resolution as the video color settings

I got the remote working for the 37" but couldn't find any settings that would let it work right. It seems to work fine on my 40" 1080p TV though. Still can't decide what is really better. The HDMI on this one does look more crisp, but at the same time, because of that, if you look close, it almost looks pixelated, but on VGA, since edges are a bit more dull, up close images look smoother. I will keep using the HDMI for now though, try to get used to it, then switch back and see if it looks bad to me then.

in CCC and i supposed what ever navidia has there is an overscan featrue that you can use to get rid of he black border of your TV (I use my 46" HDTV as my monitor and have no issues with color or sound)

For real, talk about some obscure place to hide it.

http://superuser.com/questions/57239...control-center

Thanks for the tip on that overscan, had to set mine to 0%

trying to remember exactly how to do it, you have to click on the black triangle in the upper Right corner, I think its under properties or something like that.

Im not on that computer now to check.

Additional Comment:

found my old thread

in catalyst controll center (assuming you are using your ATI card in the sig.) If this is windows, run CCC as an administrator or it wont save the changes.

Manually Adjusting Image Size and Position using Underscan/Overscan for TVs
  1. Based on the navigation system contained in the ATI Catalyst™ Control Center window, do one of the following:
    • Navigation menu—From the display palette on the Desktops & Displays page, click the desired TV, and then click Configure in the context menu that appears.
    • Navigation tree—From the tree in the Graphics Settings tab, expand TV Properties.
  2. Click Adjustments.
  3. Move the Underscan/Overscan slider to adjust the overall size of the image on the TV. Use this slider to adjust any visible black borders around the edge of the image.
Note: The slider is not available for TVs configured to use a custom or the default optimized timing mode.

If I adjust the desktop resize on the 37", it actually lowers the resolution, on the 40" everything just works anyways. Oh the joys...i really don't think the difference is that huge though, so vga on the 37 is fine. Maybe the dvi port would look a buit better? Ill try it out and report.

You might need some high-end cables to make DVI look decent.

Even the cheapest DVI cable will look better than VGA, unless it's an army-rated VGA cable or something...

I haven't heard of a "military grade" VGA cable. Link, please?

And don't tell me it's "gold plated" because it "offers lossless video".

I had no issues running an onboard HD4200 on a 52" Sharp LCD via HDMI. The only thing I had to adjust was the DPI to a larger size.
