Guild Wars vs Guild Wars 2

Hi Guys,

I am new to the whole MMO gaming scene and from my experience with FPS games on consoles etc, once a new game (version) comes out everyone crosses over to the new one. Is this the same with MMO's in general?

Also I am thinking about paynig £25 for Guild Wars and all the expansions - is this wise or should I wait for Guild Wars 2 to come out?

Cheers,
Jim

Well we can't really tell the future but it's certainly not unusual for everyone to like a new version of a game. Be it an MMO or not really, PC game or console. I could list a few examples to highlight what I mean. Anyway if you wanna get Guild Wars and play it through it will certainly give you an idea of what it's about. It's not like you have to though to be able to play GW2. I haven't played the first but certainly plan on playing the second.

Hope this helps

Some of the Guild Wars 1 stuff will interact with the second game, like awards and stuff. I cant remember the exact details but I know theres going to be some stuff from the 1st game in the second if you play it.

In GW1 is the world pretty full - I played LOTR online and that was OK but got bored of running around doing quests on my own and it got very 'samey'

In a nutshell what is Guild Wars like and what are the best bits of the game? I have had very little exposure to the game so just wondering if it is worth it really. Please sell it to me hehe

Well GW1 is instanced and not open world. You'll only encounter other people in towns and you can make groups to go out in but it won't be full of people in the actual world. As to how full, no idea. Nagoshi maybe able to answer that better.

Both games are very different but have some similarities. If you're new to guildwars i would highly recommend paying that price for all 4 gw1 games. You can then learn the lore, get a feel for the game a little, (gw2 uses an updated gw1 engine, so you'll have a similar "feel" in some ways) and start unlocking stuff in your hall of monuments. That's an eye of the north thing. The more you unlock, the more goodies roll over to gw2. Also, you reserve your name in gw2 in gw1.. So there are a lot of benefits. However i would say the lore is the best reason to play gw1 now, you will know more of what's going on and why the dragons are attacking, though that's at the end of eotn, the others are great stand alone games as well.

Oh, and servers will be up after gw2. There'll be less players, but you can still go back and unlock stuff in your hall of monuments. There'll still be monthly changes to pvp (each month we get different global bonuses to keep pvp fresh) and we'll still have holidays such as winsterday. That's christmas guildwars style. That also includes snowball fights!

If you want more info on gw2 then going to http://guildwars.incgamers.com will let you learn about the game a lot more. They keep up with all information.

Right now the game has not received to many major updates for a long time yet there's still many people playing. It's still active, but you will get a sense of people waiting around for gw2. It's been about 1-2 years i think since the last game, any mmo will suffer that. Though even with the lack of large updates there's still balancing going on, bug fixes, and a larger than most community.

The nice thing about GW1 is you have to team to get through areas in the game. I rarely soloed. I don't know how populated the servers are these days. If it were my money I'd wait for GW2 but if you really want to get in and play GW1 is a super fun game.

I'd say wait, but take my advice with a grain of salt because I hated the first GW. I gave it like five different chances and couldn't get into it at all.

I think I am going to give it a miss, simply because its not open world where you have other players running around etc - those are the games I like. I played LOTRO for a bit and enjoyed that but got a bit boring running from one part of the map to the other to talk to people.

It is the open world and seeing other players etc that appeals to me, but I always find with games like that, if yuo dont use real money to buy stuff then you are always at a disadvantage.

So really any suggestions on games decribed above that you think fits the bill?

I will see what GW2 is like later, but for now GW1 is a no go.

World of Warcraft is going to be the most populated game you could try. You have to pay a subscription fee but there's not going to be "if you don't use rela money to buy stuff you are always at a disadvantage" as it's not based on micro-transactions.
