580 GTX Hydro on a EVGA 680i mobo ?

Hi guys its been a while. I was in the market for a new GPU but I have some older tech so I was looking for a bit of advice.

CPU QX 6850
RAM Gskill Pi 8 GB, DDR-2 800
MOBO - Evga 680i
Current GPU - EVGA 8800GTX
OS Win 7 ultimate 64 bit

Wanted to upgrade my GPU to the EVGA 580 GTX hydro Copper ( Also considering the 570 GTX ) but would it be a mistake w/ my current MOBO / CPU ? I have a water cooling set up with blocks and all that stuff so If I could get away w/ only upgrading the GPU that would be best. Later down the line I plan for a system overhaul but I just cant afford the whole shebang now.

Any thoughts ?

Thanks

Can't foresee any issues as long as you game at high resolution that system won't hold you back. What PSU are you using?

I have a Seasonic 650 HT, its not SLI certified b/c its an older version.

Its crazy how fast ur system becomes obsolete. I saw 8800GTX's on e-bay for 70 bucks, i almost barfed LOL WTF I paid 750 for it. I was hoping I could get my compy to hold on for 2-3 years before a huge top of the line upgrade ( only to become obsolete )

Ditch that mobo. I had one, it was awful. Get an i52500k w/ a new msi board that has pcie 3.0 and you'll be relatively future proof for a couple years.

Yeah I know but right now I am only in the market for a GPU for various reasons ( wife ). So the 680i is what I got to work with. Personally I have been very happy w/ the MOBO, I haven't had any problems. At one point I have a C2D E6600 overclocked to 3.6 Ghz on it, it ran great.

I think it ran for a little bit, btw if your near a Microcenter there is a sale on the Zotac GTX 580 Amp edition, @ $430 and a $30 Mir, which probably makes it the cheapest 580, and they are actually binned chips, both of mine goto 950Mhz @ 1.15v.

That Zotac looks like a good deal, I could pick up an EK water block for it.

I'm planning to put them under water too, but right now I can play most of my games with either just one card, or with low clocks in SLI.

I am still tossing around the 570 GTX classified, its so much less money. Not really sure what to do.

My PSU is old but good ( Seasonic ) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151028 , but it puts a max of 30 amps out per rail ( sustained not peak ) so I am not sure it can keep up w/ a 580 GTX that requires 42 amps on a rail.

It does have great value, but on the PSU side I think you should be fine with that 650W, use a psu calculator and you probably should have some headroom, even with the 580 overclocked.

I think with just one card your system won't hold it back too bad
But if you decide to SLI then yeah you would need a major upgrade
