PSU intermittent buzz

I called the company and the technician said this is caused by coils expanding. Is this worth an RMA or is it harmless? The particular PSU at hand is known for having issues. I am trying to decide if it's worth the risk of blowing up a motherboard with a "new" or possibly refurbished unit versus staying with "expanding coils."

What is the deal with expanding coils and this buzzing?

What PSU? While coil whine is harmless, it is annoying, and there's a chance that it's not coil whine. I'd RMA it if you have the option.

Yeah. They're known as mobo slayers in the competitive benching community now. Those and the Antec HCG's. I'd most definitely RMA it.

I sent in a 850 TPQ under warranty they gave me replacement choices. Said they did not make them anymore. Got a 900w extreme gamer. Think they offered a 750 full modular also.

Maybe I'll get a HCP in it's place.

HCP and HCG are pretty much the same unit. If they send you one of those I'd sell it and purchase a different unit.

It's almost as if you'd read my mind . Corsair seems to be playing the game pretty well still, too. The biggest fault Jonny had with the HX1050W was the screws holding on the heat sinks. My biggest concerns are modularity (I don't want cables I don't need), noise, and of course performance.

The HX1050 is a good unit. If you're looking in that price range, you may want to consider this also.

More unit for roughly the same money. Quality unit with excellent reviews.

Buzzing can be caused by several different things, not all of them harmless. If they are giving you the option to RMA it, take them up on it. A blown power supply can damage other components in your PC as well so you really don't want one going out on you.

HX1050 can be had for $187 with 15% discount until 2/16 where the OCZ requires a little higher cost of blood($53 difference). I'd rather go for quality units. I don't think I need 100A on 12V though. I'm open to 70A like I have. Which typically are 800-900W units I presume.

The real kicker is that it won't buzz every time it gets the juice. Sometimes it will only kick in while browsing web pages. Tonight I applied higher voltage and 150MHz more to my video card on the core and a slight memory overclock and gamed for a few hours on Battlefield 3/ran 3DMark 2011 and no buzz. I can't explain it. I also looked up several videos on YouTube about coil whine and the sound is a little different.

Mine was like that too. It started to drive me nutz. Then I swapped and RMA'd.
