You might try jmossman's suggestion of using a different kernel if you aren't already.
I wrote this up since my 4p started failing tonight and I noticed I wasn't using 2.6.35-22. YMMV. 1. Determine where the grub menuentry count where 2.6.35-22 is starting at 0. (In my case, it was 2.) nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg 2. Edit the grub file change GRUB_DEFAULT to the number in step 1. (Ctrl+x to exit. Y to save.) sudo nano /etc/default/grub 3. Update the grub.cfg file. sudo update-grub 4. Reboot sudo shutdown -r 0 |

Oh well, I was hoping I found a pattern.
It seems the random crashes points more to a corrupt ubuntu install. I might need to reinstall myself.

You should really stick to muskys main setup guide for the basis. Plus bfs schedular and thekraken for sure.
The ext4 vs ext3 has to do with the end of the run... some have problems with it hanging over an hour. |

I originally tried a similar guide to Musky's and had partial success, with random hangs. I reinstalled using his guide and never had another problem. In fact I'm not even sure where it differed in any significant way from his guide. Both were native Ubuntu 10.10 installs tho, and both ext 3 partitions. As PatonB mentioned the ext3 vs ext4 affects the end of the WU when it's uploading. Many report very very long uploads, have heard of several hours before they finish in extreme cases.

I'm going to reinstall tonight. I find myself wanting a reader's digest version of the musky guide though. Are there any particular things I should pay attention to other than checking to make sure I use ext3 file system?

Muskys guide is quite easy to follow... Should take 20 mins to get folding off it.

The Tyan boards sure have a lot of LEDs. When my 4p finally got going, the number of LEDs seem like a lot.
Good luck working it out. My 2p did one unit in Windows Server. It's now running in Ubuntu. |
