You could aways reduce the gpu utilization to 50 percent. I'm sure the noise is from the fan most likely (maybe a little capacitor whine). At 50%, at least you would probably be producing 15-20k ppd ... maybe more! Also don't forget it has a year warranty at least, maybe 3 or more years. In that case .. you might want to make sure it breaks before the warranty is out.

Oops, yeah .. I think I was wishful thinking for you (and me) on the GTX680. I have a evga 680i se that I'm still using as my main rig. It has been pretty stable, although I have had a few issues with the rig but never really nailed down a cause. However, I don't think I have a cap whine issue. If you have another PS, it could be the PS caps whining. I had some earthwatts PS's that my wife made me quit using because she could hear the whine.
I went to the Warrant, Firehouse, and Trixter concert back in early nineties so I don't hear capacitor whine unless they are screaming for their lives. Go to a few rock concerts and you won't notice it any more!

Summer time is also not friendly for folding. There is always a dip in production in the summer.

Yha, as temperatures go up, folding goes down.
Also alot of people start seeing power bills and are freaked out by 30 bucks more amonth, and stop. Its a cycle that has always gone on. |

I hope I can keep folding at the level I'm folding at now this summer. Since I'm at school, I don't have to worry about power bills. The desktop, both monitors, speakers, and laptop use around 700w when I'm folding. I could probably keep just the desktop folding at least, hopefully 24/7.

Its not about the dollar amount for me. Its about my central air not being efficient enough in my rooms hat have PCs. My central air doesn't effectively cool one hot room. And being that I have horizontal sliding windows, window AC units aren't an option.

Yeah .. Newegg even has em. $250 .. and you too can cool any room in the house!
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16896808085 Just search for 'portable air conditioner'. Dealnews.com and techbargains usually will have one on sale from somewhere every couple of weeks. I luckily have a 'cool' room with my central AC so I'm usually pretty good. However, I did add a bedroom PC and started folding on a nvidia 460, and the room does appear to be a tad warmer (will probably be too warm in a month or so). I'm hoping by then I can get a nvidia 620 card for $20 (a man can dream) and move the 460 to my main rig in the 'cold room' |

I will shut down my 950, and keep my 2p running, they have 20ish C difference in temp, once high summer temps hit. |

Oh, but a drawback to both of them: got to drain them constantly. I opened the port for mine, let it drain into a drain pan, and shop vac'd it every day or so when it was hot and humid. |

Yeah, all the portables are cursed with the draining problem. As for size, This would be used to supplement Central Air. Not Necessarily replace it. Currently I'm trying to figure out how to change my layout because my PC is under my desk. Needless to say that my legs get a bit toasty. A window unit is a better way but that doesn't help those with non-vertical-closing, descent-sized windows. I saw one guy do a cabinet with a vent to the attic, (some ikea cabinet he stuck in his closet). However, that is a bit extreme. The other thing that you can try is to get the PCs as close to the air return on your AC (where ya stick the filter). I might help equal out the temp some.
Now if you want to go really crazy and don't need a terminal to your boxes, as well as have an outside outlet, You could always build a really small server closet (I guess more of a folding outhouse). If you have a covered back porch you buy about $80 bucks in wood and $50-80 in insulation. Cut a door buy some hinges!! Cut a hole, add a $120 AC window unit. If ya need to move it, just grab a dolly and go! You might want to get one of those indoor/outdoor temp and humidity clocks and put the "outdoor" sensor in the folding outhouse and you have temp and humidity monitoring! For some reason I now have the urge to go to Lowe's and buy a bunch of stuff then go home and play with power tools! Last edited by dblind1 : 04-20-2012 at 03:11 PM. |
