Microsoft announces $39.99 Windows 8 Pro upgrade offer for most Windows users

We set out to make it as easy as possible for everyone to upgrade to Windows 8. Starting at general availability, if your PC is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 you will qualify to download an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99 in 131 markets. And if you want, you can add Windows Media Center for free through the “add features” option within Windows 8 Pro after your upgrade.
When you use Windows.com to purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro, the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant makes upgrading simple by walking you through the upgrade process step-by-step from purchase to download and then of course installation.

Nice idea, shame I and many others simply wont bother. Win7 is more than good enough of an OS to last for many more years yet and probably till the end of the decade imo, unless something drastic changes.

Not a bad idea if you have an old XP license sitting about.....though I see no reason to upgrade from 7.

Yea, I think they would probably have to pay me the $39.99 in order for me to take the Win8 license, and I still wouldn't use it.

This tells me they know that Windows 8 is a dog and they're trying to do everything but give it away.

Remember, even Windows suck, odd Windows are much better.

Unless they make some drastic changes cant see anyone upgrading to Windows 8

from the releases so far its just a awful Metro UI slapped ontop of a crippled Win 7 kernel.

There is still a massive amount of work needed before this can be considered a usable OS as a replacement for Win 7

Can you say "old license of XP that isn't on a system so it won't matter about hardware"?

Looking back at the releases, it seems that as far as MS Operating systems, it is best to go with "every other" version.

Win 95 - Good
Win ME - Bad
Win XP - Good
Win Vista - Bad
Win 7 - Good
Win 8 - Bad?

Additional Comment:

Although I did have a pretty good overall experience with Vista. Never ran into the problems that so many did. /shrug

I'm kinda looking forward to win8. shoot me.

it's compatible with nvidia tegra processors, which means i can run it on the asus transformer. for whatever reason i have never liked android; i prefer the windows environment more.

sure, i can **** and moan that they should have tegra support patched into win 7, but I cant really blame them.

the end result?
win 8= win7+tablet support

Microsoft follows Intel's "tick tock" release scheme.

3.1 = very good
95 = "relative" crap
98 = long lived and widely accepted
ME = utter crap
2000 = freaking amazing
xp = again, amazing. I guess we missed a "tock"
vista = I'd rather NOT have a computer than use this
7 = very good
8 = likely to suck

3.1 was "dope" lol. Granted I did go overboard with listing most (not all) of their releases. However you can't skip the stuff you're to young to have played with. Big ones you guys missed were 3.1 and 2000.
