Edit: quick question, can you mix se and non se processors on a board? I haven't done that, just wondering for future purchases. Project 8102 ~ 17 hours on a 4x6172 stock Last edited by Sneevly : 08-21-2012 at 06:34 PM. |

From what I've read over at Hardforum, no you can't mix SE and non SE chips together.

Ordered 4 6180's SE (only come in SE I believe). Currently I have 4x 6128's folding, just started earlier today. 22 minutes a frame on 8101 - 15 minutes a frame on a 4x6172 to put that into perspective. Not bad for 32 cores. I'll obviously replace the 4 when I have time, but there's a chance I'll make a third set up with the extra processors. May just sell them. I don't feel like buying another board/ram all that jazz, but I think I may have some people who will. If I sell the 6128's, it will be on this forums for sale first. ~100 each plus shipping. Just figured I'd update you guys on my stupidity :P

Yea that's what I meant. That was my original plan at least. If I have some family members interested in buying board/ram, then ill keep the 4. Otherwise ill sell them on here/eBay. These processors make for a very cheap 4 or 2 processor setup. Id recommend a 4p board though. its 630 as opposed to 450(2p supermicro) I think. I don't know im on my phone.

My 2p with 6128s is basically useless (8K ppd) for bigadv. It completes outside of the time expected for 8101, so zero bonus points. I'm trying -smp only to see what it looks like.
Additional Comment: Update...I'm guessing it will do a little over 20K per day now as SMP only. Bigadv was a PPD killer when I got an 8101. Still, not very points compared to my 4Ps. Last edited by jimh425 : 08-29-2012 at 08:55 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

I'm not sure what I'm getting from them. It locked up for 10 hours around 15%, but just turned in a 221k unit. No idea why yet, hopefully it's not related to some of the capacitors screeching on it. Once my atx 8 pin converter wires come in I'll try another power supply out to see if that's the issue. The 6180's will be nice. I'll have to see how much people have overclocked them.
Edit: just read tears bios guide, looks.. Too simple. Also, had to shut the two servers down. I have to re wire some outlets, the set up I had wasn't safe. That's for another day of course so I'm not sure when I'll have them running. Last edited by Sneevly : 08-29-2012 at 09:17 PM. |

I'm going to be redoing my power as well including upgrading my service. I have systems in multiple rooms now, but it seems like there is still some overlap of circuits.
I've found outlets in the same room are on different circuits, but sometimes overload because of other components in other rooms. Last edited by jimh425 : 08-30-2012 at 08:53 AM. |

Yea, I'm starting to see the fire hazard of this. Older outlets have that wiggle room so it fried a terminal on an extension cord last night. Then both batteries were charging on the other line for the UPS systems so it tripped the 15amp breaker while I was asleep. I've got everything reconfigured with a new 20 amp line now, so my folding should be some what more consistent. Waiting on the 6180's, those should make a big difference.
EDIT: Btw I should mention I have the i7 970 and the 4 6128 on the 20 amp, and the 4 6172 and my brothers non-folding i7 on the 15. If I had another computer I'm getting another 20 amp line, I already have all of the materials. And it's just safer. |

Be careful with extension cables...
I was using one cable for 2 rigs and 6 video cards pulling ~ 1300w. That cable was getting VERY warm. I have since split the load over 2 cables and a solid Surge Supressor. |

Yea I'm using new outlets now. Romex to a power box right at the UPS systems, then the other is a 20 amp extension cord (not cheap but I have them laying around from work).
Any ways, my 6180's just showed up, so I'm going to install those, do the tears bios thing, see what kind of overclock I can get and get it folding asap. Also, 6176 SE for sale. I'm selling it for the same price I bought it for, minus the shipping that I'll be paying for. |
