I need an AWESOME UPS
We've been having power problems at our house. We're at the end of a line that services the commerical downtown (lots of hair salons) so we have dips, extended periods of low voltage, and skewness. By skewness I mean the sine wave of the power is being distorted one way or the other, and you can tell this is happening because coil-wound AC motors like those in power tools or old-school train transformers run hotter than normal. My dad wants to protect our home theater with a UPS. We estimate our load at about 1KW (plasma TV, PS3, 5.1 speaker system, plus other stuff). But this is where it all breaks down... What we need is a full-range power conditioner - the kinds with batteries, so the unit has something to draw on to make up power deficiencies. We also need one that outputs a pure sine wave. All the units we've found advertise a sine wave while running on backup power only, but say nothing about what they put out when simply conditioning wall power. It also needs to be fairly quiet since it's in the home theater. AUUGGHH! Does anyone have a good unit they know of, use, or can recommend? Thanks! |

Mostly they condition the power to a certain degree which you set up with the accompanying software. If the supply line gets too far out of range they switch to battery until supply gets back into acceptable range.
I have an apc 1500 xs. It momentarily clicks to battery during storms sometimes. During a blackout I run it off a portable (dirty power) generator and it cleans that without needing to use the battery so it can clean pretty well. Without spending thousands you won't get much run time during a brownout / blackout. You should only load the unit about 80% so for a 1kw draw you will want a minimum of 1200w unit. Only the battery back up outlets will keep your equipment running during power fluctuations, my unit also has surge protected only outlets, they aren't fed during service interruptions. I'm not sure how well / if the surge only outlets are cleaned. |
