Upgrade or build a new system?

Alright so right now my setup is pretty dated imo

Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 AM2
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Xclio GREATPOWER X14S4P3
ATI HD 4830
4 gb of DDR2 800
(Planning on updating from 32 bit win 7 to 64 so I can utilize 8 gigabytes)

I have mostly been using this as an htpc as I have been out of the gaming scene for a while. Now I want to play a few games but it either runs the game not up to my standards or doesnt run the game at all (or crashes first). I have only so far played the first call of duty, Bioshock, Fallout New Vegas and I am trying to play Dirt 3.

Onto the question. Is there anything I can upgrade to get a bit more performance? Or would it be best to just do a full build (mobo, cpu, ram, video card, power supply)? After typing all of this, it makes me realize how outdated my system really is

Edit: haha look at my old signature photo That was cool back when I was 13.

yeah, I would say new system with that hardware, plus it's fun to build a new system.

Unless I missed it I don't see the video card you are currently using listed?

Ideally I would build a new system if possible. If not usually the best upgrades are...

SSD
Video
RAM

ahhh I knew I forgot something. It is an ATI HD4830. I do want to upgrade, but I hate having spare parts...since I never get around to selling them.

I hear you there, I have spare parts all over the place.... trying to purge some of them. I actually have a whole spare AM3+, antec 900, PII 965, ssd/WDVR system all assembled and just sitting around while I decide what to do with it. Not to mention the piles of old socket 754 stuff everywhere.

yeah it sucks. Makes me realize why I took a break from pc gaming

What would be a good setup then? I am wanting to go intel this time around since I have only done AMD. Whats a good cheaper I5 setup? would my power supply be able to handle a new setup? I dont want to spend too much maybe $800 tops

i'd say buy a 7850, overclock it to 1GHz call it a day~
the CPU is a bit weak by today's standards so you would see a big upgrade even in the form of a Pentium G630, leaving you an upgrade path to an i5 or i7 down the road. since intel killed overclocking, you could also save money and buy a B75 motherboard and get USB 3.0
