8-core AMD Zen CPU vs i7 6900K

AMD said its Summit Ridge CPU, aimed at high-performance desktops, will pack 8 cores and feature simultaneous multi-threading technology to give it 16 threads of processing power. Gone are the shared, clustered multi-thread cores of the previous Bulldozer and Piledriver designsóZenís cores are stand-alone cores with SMT. To prove that Zen has the right stuff, AMD officials on Wednesday night demonstrated before a crowd of reporters and analysts that an 8-core Zen could run just as fast as Intelís newest 8-core consumer Core i7 chip.

True for me as well. As long as everything is priced under Intel, and AMD's motherboard partners give some good connectivity options on their boards (I need lots of USB ports on the motherboard) then I am all in.

Will have to figure out my H60 though, maybe Corsair will have a bracket for it, maybe not?

From what I've read, AM4 will use the same bracket as AM3 and previous. Summit Ridge chips are to come packaged with the Wraith cooler.

The leaked gaming benchmarks are crap. This thing will have to dramatically improve single-threaded performance.

We must keep in mind these chips are Engineering samples. Not indicative of actual release clock speeds and turbo boosts.

Curious why the lock down at 3ghz. I hope to be optimistic these overclock well, but most i7's are 4ghz. So what's the deal with the low clock comparison.

Things that make you go hmmm...

Well, we know IPC is roughly equivalent if not a touch better than Broadwell-E. If these can scale clocks as well as Intel can, then we've got a great chip on our hands.

If AMD can keep up on that however...

Or game developers could start multi-threading games properly, so that single thread performance isnt as much of an issue in gaming.

That's a million times easier said than done. However, DX12 is helping.

Have no idea what the intended use is, but the ones in the pic appear to be dummies. There are no contacts in either of them. Nothing but plastic.

I just stuck with AMD for the sake of the slow upgrades I've done and back in the day easier to get a lazy OC. Now it's just a cost thing.

INTEL, Chevy, Waffles, & Never.

AMD just doesn't have the research money to keep up with Intel. All they can do now is trail behind and pick up the scraps. When they had the edge they didn't capitalize on it enough and grow to really be a competitor to Intel. AMD will have to come up with something revolutionary again if they don't want to fade away in the CPU market.

I don't think they'll fade away them being gone would likely cause Intel more problems than gaining their market share is worth.

Its all very well and nice them coming up with something new and revolutionary, the problem lies with the market.
If the market has little likely for it, it wont take it up, if another company has a larger share of the market there is little incentive for everyone to change there systems to make use of this new thing.

intel paid to use AMDs x86 instruction architecture, intel also did some underhanded dealings to make computer makers use intel CPUs instead of AMD. it all swings in roundabouts, neither company would be anywhere near where they are now if it wasn't for someone paying someone else for something - be it under the table payments, results of lawsuits after corporate espionage - they all live in each others pockets, its the way the world works

AMD has to pick up in the gaming department. Right now it's just pitiful.
