Windows 10 update to add new feature "Game Mode"

The overarching goal is to make Windows 10 "the best operating system for games"—and critically, to make it more consistent, so that frame rates and performance are more predictable and uniform. Gamill said that when Game Mode is active, the operating system will tend to be biased toward allocating CPU and GPU resources to the game. The Creators Update will ship with a periodically updated whitelist of known games for automatically enabling Game Mode. Windows users will also be able to opt in and out of Game Mode on a game-by-game basis using the Win+G keyboard shortcut.

I've been reading about this and others have been sceptical about this working very well except for UWP games.I guess we'll see how it's implemented.

It's true that a stripped down Windows would be nice, but then again, if game mode disables most of Windows' junk running in the background "temporarily", that'd be nice.

But then again, it's not like CPUs are used at 100% all the time while gaming and it's also not like CPUs aren't fast enough that we need to salvage every possible every possible CPU resources, just like back then's fancy Killer network cards and external sound cards.

I suspect for those gaming on APU's this would offer the most benefit.

For me its not a performance issue as such, its that windows can be a complete prat at times and knacker games Im playing by running crap in the background. One minute everything is fine then windows runs some crap nailing the HDD at max read/write for a full 5mins and makes games completely unplayable.

Or I stop playing a game to go for a coffee and find my system has restarted and can't be used for 10 mins because windows has decided to update without my permission.

If "game mode" stops that happening, plus removes other windows junk I dont need nor want I would be very happy with it regardless of any performance "gains".
