DVI TO VGA Connector - PNY GF4 Ti 4200 -

my bud bought this 64mb pny verto gf4ti4200 (from the compusa deal last week). problem is that he uses an older Compaq Deskpro Desktop and the VGA connector is blocked (such that he cannot connect the CRT Monitor to it).

My suggestion is to use the free DVI port (with a DVI to VGA adaptor ) to connect to the CRT monitor.

Here's my dilemma...i dont have the card in front of me, so I'm unsure as to what DVI to VGA adaptor i need to buy. I see one on new egg...

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...fer=pricewatch

but i'm not sure if this will work on the PNY card.
(clueless as usual)...any help would be appreciated.

Yah that'll be fine, a DVI connector is a DVI connector same with a VGA connector. That adapter will work fine.

That's not right. There's a couple different pin-outs of DVI connectors! See if you can find a closeup pic of his model on New Egg that will show the back of the riser plate.

DVI is the new interface for Digital flat panel LCD monitors and video cards. There are a number of versions of DVI, including DVI-I (analog & Digital together) , DVI-D (only the Digital signal) and DVI-A (only the Analog signal). In DVI like anything else, Analog only talks to analog, and digital only talks to digital. Don't try using a DFP or DVI-D (Digital only) monitor through an adapter to a VGA (analog) video card, it will not work!
Most likely he'll need a DVI-A to 15 SVGA adapter, but I would check the video card to make sure. There's DVI-A, DVI-D, DVI-I, DVI-M in both dual- and single-link and either male or female too. Here's some pic's:
