I'm not sure if the 9600's do but all the others (9500,9700,9800)do,you can reduce the heat to your card by removing them.

Heh, I don't recommend removing the shim even if it will increase cooling.

This of course is because of a bad experience. I killed a softmoddable 9500 by removing it's shim.

How in the Hell did you mess it up by removing the shim, the only thing i can think of as you might have scraped something with the blade that you should not have.

Removing the shim is pathetically easy,What told you that that is what broke it?

Ya, you just gotta be carefull that's all, make sure the blade doesn't slip, mak sure your not cutting two things accidently, and make sure you don't crush the coe with the shim off. Which are all not that hard to do.

What told me that removing the shim broke it is the card was working when I took it out of my system, and then when I put it back in after removing the shim it wasn't working anymore.

If you remove the shim, I'd recommend using some kind of pads like on Athlon XPs. I'd be afraid of crushing the core, especially with a large heatsink.
