It is not supported by the N3 chipsets, only the N4's. No biggie, not worth replacing the mobo.

So what does it mean that the Belarc Advisor is telling me I have a 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 64 CPU and that the bus clock is set for only 200 MHz?

That is correct your 3400+ has an internal clock speed of 2.4GHz and your default HTT is 200 (5 or auto).

you, my friend, have a lot to read up on

http://forums.extremeoverclocking.co...d.php?t=138046

read that to learn about FSBs and clocks speeds and such.

I bet you guys are familiar with Belarc Advisor. Wonder why it reports a 2.2 GHz processor when it's supposed to be 2.4? At least I paid for a 3400+, and that's what the manual says it is. You need to know, Dave, two towers and all their peripherals are hidden under a nine-foot U-shaped desk (where they get plenty of fresh air) in our study. It makes my wife happy when I slide the keyboard in and swing the microphone arm down, guests see only a 15" LCD monitor in this otherwise traditional-looking room. Dawn thinks it's elegant, but it means that to drag the tower out from under a MiniDisc deck, the Cybex SwitchView, UPSs, modems and other stuff, I have to pull out the jukebox Athlon 2400 first. It sits just to the right of the 3400+ machine. Then I have to disconnect everything--a major task I've been putting off until I need to install hardware.

Otherwise, I'd be taking a look at the CPU to be sure I got what I remember getting!

I just found the Gigabyte manuals and printed out the ExtremeOverclocking guides. Hmm. Just off the cuff, how far would you expect I could crank up the bus speed? I’m taking my time, ‘cause I’m a little chicken till I know a little. Then I get dangerous.

use CPUZ for clock information, thats what most of us are familiar with here

you could probably get the bus to way above 250 if your ram can handle it

About 2.5GHz regardless of the RAM, as we can always use the RAM divider, which doesn't hurt anything.

I just read through a couple of overclocking manuals. I read all the words and tried to grasp the concepts, but I kept having to stop and try to learn the terminology figure out what the concepts mean. I need manuals to explain the manuals! I need to go back to How Computers Work.

Just when I thought I was beginning to make progress, I tried to read the motherboard manual. I might understand 10% of it. I've heard a lot of these terms before, but I've really never known what they mean, except in the most superficial way.

And I made a discouraging discovery while I was reading the manual. This is apparently a 754-pin motherboard, which means I don't have a 939-pin processor after all. Now that I know that and know that this motherboard doesn't support all the latest technology, it would be tempting to start over. I'm having thoughts of selling this system I've been so pleased with—until this weekend.

That's what I get for putting together a system on my own for the first time. I went off half-cocked. Anybody can stick the pieces together, but it takes more thought than I put into it to get the most out of it.

I thought I had a hot-smoking setup. I thought the new 4000+ might not be a big enough step up to warrant the investment. Now I'm seeing visions of that CPU plus a motherboard with 4000 MB of dual-channel memory! But then why not go to a dual-processor system? You can end up chasing the latest Big Thing like a dog chasing its tail, can't you?

The two 1 GB DIMMs I ordered this afternoon cost more than a lot of pretty good desktops. I might go for the Raptors, but I'm not ready to start all over with a new motherboard and processor. Not this season. I'll save that for 2006, maybe, and hope the RAM and hard drives don't become obsolete by then!

Meanwhile, it's going to be fun in a way to learn enough to soup up the system I have, but I wish one of you guys could just come over and do the overclocking and let me get back to what I know. I keep learning more than I ever wanted to about computers. It's fun, but I'd really rather just use them as tools.

Now you know why I wanted full system specs!

S-754 does NOT support dual channel RAM, among other problems.

hey! dont be sad, you still got a **** fast system. if it makes you feel any better, its a whole lot better than mine

if you want to learn a lot, grab the book "Upgrading and Repairing PCs". the latest edition i think is 17th, i learned most of the stuff i know from the 14th edition. i read about 1000 of the 1600 pages a few years ago. a lot of info for a 13 year old!

EDIT: there is nothing wrong with 754. the only "bad" thing is that it doesnt support dual channel memory, which doesnt help an incredible amount anyways

ram wont be able to handle that clock speed, but i think a raid configuration would be his best bet as it does sound like I/O bottleneck. i dont think ull need to sell ur system just for this one program, theres nothing wrong with s754, its just that 939 is what everything is being made with now. they do tend to OC better than 754 but that doesnt mean that 754 dont OC. heres what i would suggest u do:

1) OC it as much as you possibly can with current cooling and ram.

If that doesnt help your cause

b) purchase a raid configuration, id suggest 2x74GB Raptors. ur mobo has onboard raid so not to worry. this will give u 150GB of hdd space and fast data access (really fast). this will cost u about 360 for a pair.

c) buy 2x512mb of OCing ram, patriot XBL would be your best choice as its not too pricey and does a heck of a job. linky itll cost u about 230 for 1gig and will let u OC quite nicely.

my bad, didnt read that post. if that didnt boost your performance then OC it, im sure that will help quite a bit as u will be able to access the memory a lot faster. i suggest only going to the limit of the ram rather than using a divider.

Maybe 10%, but I'd rather have too much than too little!

OK, In our terms you have an N3-150 mobo.
Quote:
Supports AMD Athlon 64 Socket 754 Processor
NVIDIA nForce3 150 Chipset
3 DIMM Slot DDR400 up to 3GB Max
AGP 8X, 5 x PCI Slots
6 x USB 2.0, 2 x IEEE 1394
5.1 Audio, Gigabit LAN
With a 3400+ 2.2GHz clawhammer CPU.

Not bad, but not the best.

The ideal thing would be to replace the mobo, CPU & Video Card (VC)

DFI N4 Ultra &
S-939 A64 (we can discuss which one, the 4000+ is my first choice)
6600 Video Card (the VC for this class (N4) of mobo must be PCI-E, not AGP)

Doing this opens our options with SATA II HDD's which in RAID 0 would give you a noyiceable gain.

We will look at it later.

Dave

i dunno about upgrading.... he's already got a sweet rig, if he goes to 939, the performance increase wont be high enough to justify the cost.
