The Top PSU brands

I have always wanted to make this, so if you have any thoughts please share. Did I leave anything out? Disagree with some of the positions on the list?

These are as I have gathered the top PSU brands (ranked)... If need be compare the high end models only (Thermaltake's ToughPower series only, since the others are no good)

Seasonic Actually make Corsair PSUs aswell as quite a few others, so really Seasonic would be near the very top. Silverstone would also be above OCZ. You also forgot Zippy PSUs

Etasis should be near the top. I might include Tagan somewhere under TT.

Personally I wouldn't mention Thermaltake. Yes, they have some decent units, but it's generally a good idea to stay away from them.

Also, in the linked PSU guide there is a list like this...

Quote:
These quality brands are highly recommended,
however not every power supply they offer will meet your needs,
be especially careful to make sure that the +12V rail(s) offer a
Minimum of +12V@26A for Single Video Card Systems & +12V@34A for Dual Video Card (SLI/Crossfire) Systems & More is Better!.

Class 1: These are the Best:

PC Power & Cooling (All Turbo Cool & ULTRA-QUIET SILENCER 610W & 750W),
Seasonic (S-12, S-12E+, M-12),
Corsair,
Silverstone (Zeus models ST56ZF, ST75ZF, and ST85ZF),
Etasis &
Zippy.

Class 2:

Antec,
Enermax,
Enhance,
Fortron (FSP),
Hiper (Type-M 670W & 730W & Type-R 730W)
I-Star,
OCZ Technology,
PC Power & Cooling,
Seasonic,
Silverstone,
Sparkle,
Tagan,
Thermaltake ToughPower (Only the ToughPower Line!),
Vantec &
XCilo.

Class 3:

Hiper (Type-R 580W, 530W & 480W)
Mushkin &
Sunbeam NUUO

Links to all of these fine manufactures websites & reviews are provided at the end.

There are many problems that crop up when creating lists like this. First of all you need to clearly state your ranking criteria. Second, many brands have products that span several "tiers". Third, PSU product lines change frequently as old units are dropped, existing units get revision updates and new units are released. Fourth, excess detail tends to create confusion among less knowledgeable readers.

It is generally easier to provide a basic list of manufacturers/brands that have a proven history of providing quality power supplies. You can then bring focus by providing specific examples of power supplies that stand out from the crowd as a result of excellent build quality and electrical performance. By keeping it simple it is easier to avoid errors and inconsistencies like those found throughout the updated list.

I dunno, Silverstone F is tier 3, the others are tier 2 or 1. The list is probably too old, and maybe the DA's are not on it yet. But silverstone is known for good quality, you will not be disappointed.

Well I can say from my own experience owning/using them that the Zippy GSM's are overrated if you consider noise a criteria. Just too loud compared to its peers and given it's price.

The list is old b/c it doesn't show Enermax Infiniti series. VERY excellent PSU's, at least the top model 720 is, and that one easily makes the "Tier 1" spot. Build quality and performance at least as good if not better than the Galaxy series. For power-hog systems like Crossfire 2900's, Enermax should make a somewhat larger Infiniti model and it would own.

Also the Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850 isn't listed. Based on its performance and build quality, this is another model that should be in "Tier 1".

Then again, Zippy's target market has only recently shifted outside the industrial market... they still seem pretty bent on making sure the things are cool at all costs

For the most part, I'm well past trying to group good PSU's by brand - there's too much variety even within companies out there. These days, I recommend on a model by model basis. There are quite a few tier 3 models, for instance, I would take over any Topower made product; and I'm running a CWT unit right now that belongs in tier 1 if anything does.

Agreed. What Zippy might not realize yet is that most of us don't treat our PC's like servers by sticking them in another room to let them roar as loud as they want.

Actually the list came from XtremeSystems.org. That's where i go the information from. I have a link to it at the wiki but here it is so there is no trouble from XtremeSystems about copying the information.
