nVidia 9800GX2 Review Roundup

A collection of reviews of nVidia’s latest, top performing 9800GX2:

"The GX2 performance matched that of GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB SLI. The real advantage to the GeForce 9800 GX2 is going to be its ability to allow non-SLI motherboard owners a better performing alternative than the current 8800 GTX. ...The real star of the show however seems to be GeForce 8800 GT SLI which came very close to the performance of the 9800 GX2 for a lot less cash. Thumbs down

So this is what happens when there is no competition in the marketplace. We get a product is the exact same as the old one it supposedly replaces. When it used to be a new top end card would always be about double the performance of the old one it replaced. BOOOOO Nvidia, BOOOO!

I agree, this is a terrible naming scheme. This is the 8800GX2, not 9 series.

Wow that's weak... Hope Nvidia hears the collective cry of dissatisfaction in their pocket... The only place they seem to be listening to....

I guess that by posting our review of the Gigabyte GeForce 9800 GX2 I might start a fire... you guys don't seem to like the GX2 at all. Ouch.

Sure it is just a little better than SLI'ed 8800's, but then again it's brand new and the price will soon drop. Remember when the 8800 GTX launched with a $550 price tag?

the only reason they called it a 9 series is because ATI did the same thing with the 3xxx's and they don't want noobs to think the 3xxx is better because its new and the 8800's are over a year old, but g92 really should have been 8900, I still don't understand why they stuck with the 8800 scheme. this card is totally pointless tho, from what I've seen the quad sli driver they released doesn't scale worth a ****

Hmm I have to say I'm not really disappointed. Yes, it performs less than we expected, but still two 8800's in one card is something I appreciate. In the 2-3 months I still have to work before I can purchase my rig I expect the prices to drop quite a lot, maybe I could even afford to SLI to of those. I'm wondering if that's worth the money though... Only result would be that I can play Crysis a step higher.

EDIT: I found a dutch review , which indicates that the HD3870X2 is equal or even better in most games. The results should be readable even by nondutch people, quite multilanguage.

from past traits them dual GPU's never drop in price that much. better off buying a second hand 8800 when the time comes for a real bargain

You do know that the 9800GTX = 8800GTS(G92). The 9800GTX is only overclocked slightly. See below. Why pay $50 to $80 more for something you can do for free with RivaTuner.

9800GTX :
128 Stream Processors.
675 MHz core clock, 1688 MHz shader clock.
2200 MHz memory, with a 256-bit memory interface.
512 MB of GDDR3 memory

8800GTS(G92) :
128 Stream Processors.
650 MHz core clock, 1625 MHz shader clock.
1940 MHz memory, with a 256-bit memory interface.
512 MB of GDDR3 memory
