SP3; Whats the Deal Microsoft?

Call it a Hamlet moment for the PC industry, filled with political intrigue and machinations worthy of the great Shakespeare play: to wait for XP SP3 or move to Vista now that Microsoft has released Vista SP1? Or in other words: "To XP, or not to XP?" That is the question.

It's a question that is burning up the blogosphere with some speculating that Microsoft has delayed XP SP3, a long awaited release that could boost the performance of XP, to get more users to adopt Vista, a potential cash cow for Microsoft and PC makers given the operating system's robust hardware refresh requirements.

With many in the blogosphere speculating that Microsoft could release the final version of XP SP3 this week, Microsoft late Tuesday snuffed out all hope that users would see the service pack, originally slated for release in 2006, any time soon.

hmm interesting. I know im running the sp3 beta right now, and it seems just as stable as sp2, so I would that they are probably delaying it. There really isn't anything different in sp3 though, I think it was mainly just a security update.

More likely their team was focused on getting the priority SP1 out for their new cash cow than supporting their old OS. More essential to get those patches in for a new OS than an old, proven one anyway.

As for something more devious? Please. While I strongly dislike MS, they have no obligation to support XP anymore and plus SP1 decreased performance... in most cases drastically!

...but Chris, you got me talking, you clever devil you.

I ran SP3 on my last XP machine before I upgraded it to Vista and it gave me nothing to speak of and on paper is purely a roll-up of past hot-fixes and if I remember right it only offered speed boosts to productivity type applications and offered little to the regular home/gaming user.

I no longer care about sp3 because i love the professionalism of vista. I like the interface a lot better. It's little bugs get annoying however. SP1 has not fixed any of my little problems yet either. Funny thing is i have yet to get a virus with vista were xp it was a once a month ordeal to reinstall a clean copy.

I am really getting annoyed about people complaining there computer wont be able to run vista, Because in reality it can My laptop is a perfect example, P3 1.3 and 512 mb and no name graphics card and it works fine. If you can't run vista maybe its time to upgrade anyway.

I dont no why people want sp3 so bad, xp sp2 is so stable and runs great. SP3 is going to be no different. Capriceman, a P3 1.3GHz would run vista like poop lol.

I read EOC a lot, and watch the stats for the folding team I'm on. I had to register just to deal with this post. Vista is fine by me, but on a P3? Get real. If you had to reinstall XP monthly, that's your own **** fault.

From what I can tell a lot of software venders are not ready for SP3, for exsample Trend Mirco (M$ uses them for hotmail scans) dosen't have a fix for SP3.
When I install SP3 beta, trend locked up and had to be uninstalled. and from talking to there tech support they still don't have it working

On SP3 Beta here.

As b1lk1 said, it's simply a rollup of the previous updates. Nothing special.

Of course they are holding back SP3. They have no great reason to rush SP3 out do they. They want Vista out there.

You might want to stop visiting so many pr0n sites eh?

I type this on a computer that has had the same install of XP SP2 on it for 8 months with no antivirus, no firewall, and no anti spyware. My other machine is going on 2 years now, with no issues.

If you were to install XP on your laptop you would notice a huge difference in performance, it would be like going from a Pentium 166 w/MMX to an Intel Core 2 Quad.

Well maybe not that big of a difference but good god man. I couldnt stand the slowdown of running vista on my overclocked Dualie. How you can handle it on a P3, is beyond me.

XP can run probably as long as Vista...which is about 6 months for me.

Vista is still buggy. I'd rather run a Linux flavor that is known to be stable and customizable and faster.

According to Micro Mart (Britains only weekly PC Mag) Microsoft already have a working OS to replace OS (how working it is I am not sure).

I quote:
Quote:
Speculation is rife that Microsoft's Windows Vista's successor will arrive pretty darned soon, because Microsoft has already submitted an early version of Windows 7 to the US government. An antitrust settlement means that Microsoft products have to be checked out by a technical committee to ensire that it's not violating any of its promises regarding openness and interoperability, but this also means that the existence of a working version of the new operating system is now known about. Might Vista turn out to be little more than a blip on the radar? Only time will tell...

Time to update your AV/Spyware suite to something that doesn't suck

jk

Seriously, M$ needs to get the ball rolling. It's bad enough it took them so long to develop and release Vista, and it's really nothing special IMHO. Give me XP with upgraded security and DX10, just like Vista should've been in the first place. But, I go by the philosophy of "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it".

ya I know its a bloated package, and really don't see a need for it at all for myself but I have employee's!

I've been "unprotected" for as long as SP3 beta has been out and no problems thanks to my hardware VPN firewall, but that's on my office pc only I use..

Not unless they want the entire business world to start looking for a new OS.

Sp2 was delayed a long time before it was released officially, but it will arrive eventually and XP should be supported for a while longer, similar to windows 2000.
