Microsoft not extending availability of XP
Microsoft announced yesterday the worldwide extension of the availability of Windows XP Home for an emerging, new class of mobile personal computers commonly known as ultra-low-cost PCs, or ULCPCs. Windows XP Home for ULCPCs will be available until the later of June 30, 2010, or one year after general availability of the next version of Windows. Microsoft |

So what? I can still get my hands on Windows 95, doesn't mean it's a good idea. MS simply can't support all their OS's for ever, Xp will be just a memory soon. Then Vista will fade away, it's a cycle. Beautiful, in it's own way.

Well, by saying that XP will always be available kind of implies that it would be installed and used otherwise what's the point of mentioning it? My response is simply to state that OS's change, clinging to the past is futile.

I'll be the first to throw a shovel full of dirt on XP's coffin.
Ozz81, the release of Vista is that same thing that happened when XP was released. Nothing worked right for XP for the first year. Funny how everyone seems to forget that now since it is so fashionable to make fun of Vista. XP needs to die. Period. |

Anyway, I'll say basically the same I said earlier. OS's change, that's just the way it is. Windows 95 wasn't broke. 98 wasn't broke. Millenium...ok...Millenium was broke. But the point remains; OS's, just like hardware, evolve. My old 9800pro wasn't broke but I still replaced it. |

With the talk of Windows7 being available in another 2yrs, whats the point of even using WinVista. I'll keep using WinXP till they pry it from my cold dead hands.

I ain't that impressed with Vista. It's really a bloat it feels like. It takes longer for it to boot than XP. The thing that makes me feel better about it though is that it is efficient with memory much more like Linux, which I can understand.
My biggest gripe is how inconvenient the Control Panels are. If I wanted to get to TCP/IP settings, it took two less steps in XP than Vista for example. It does get annoying quick. Another gripe (which doesn't affect me since I only run Basic, but I have seen it on other computers) is that Vista's Aero is really inefficient. Also, the battery life on my laptop could be better. For some reason, it just isn't as good as Linux/XP. |

well im hoping to ride out xp pro until windows 7 or minwin, whatever they were talking about with like a 40mb ram usage. I have a vista partition, i have never even used it. Its noticeably slower than xp(for me at least) and xp does everything i need, and quick. I dont get into all the fancy aero features, because really it takes me longer to get my stuff done in vista.
to each his own, i am happy with xp sp2 and thats what i run on all of my computers(well i have a few opensuse 10.3 boxes as well) |

You won't need to either unless you actually need a new copy. I sold my last PC with the copy of XP on it otherwise I'd probably still be running XP. I just couldn't see the logic in buying another copy of XP over Vista when I built my current PC.

Its not such a bad thing. Since the release of SP1 for Vista I believe Vista is a hell of a lot better. Vista can only get better from here, its just a pain that a lot of software companies decided to take their time making their software compatible with Vista. I don't think all the blame should fall directly on MS

The I/O issue with copying files is a killer, maybe that was fixed with sp1, don't know cause I'm back to xp before it came out. As mentioned, the control panel is a lot bigger hassle. Personally, I like Aero. Also, searchable start menu.
A lot of nice features imo, but enough deal breakers that it wasn't quite worth it for me. And none of the features were mind blowing to make it worth dealing with the bull****. Also, UAC is poorly implemented. First, too many apps try to write to areas where they need admin, or need admin to run properly (for example ventrilo), for the current implementation. Some might say this is the apps fault, I say it's MS's fault due to history. Also, dimming the screen or whatever to open the dialog takes FAR too many resources and offers no benefit. Just pop up the window... I get noticeable slow downs as the screen dims, which is far from acceptable. |

Its always going to be an on going battle, it never ends. new VS old, amd VS intel, good VS bad, ibm VS mac, winxp VS vista, etc. The more things change, the more they stay the same...
