Sun Latches on to AMD Opteron 'Barcelona'
Sun Microsystems is now the latest vendor to use Advanced Micro Devices' quad-core Opteron chips in its rack-mount server and blade portfolios. Sun is offering eight systems that take advantage of the quad-core Opteron processors formerly code-named Barcelona. The one blade and seven rack-mount systems that are being released May 13 are part of Sun's x64 (x86, 64-bit) line of servers. Article |

Good news for AMD methinks but I have to believe this is only a temporary solution until Intel's become more cost effective.

there are some AMD chips that do reach into the $1000 price range to..not just the intel chips r expensive... i dont think that Intel will lower there prices for right now nor in the near future.. until they come up with a new arch that can take the C2D arch.. and i dont think that is a concern for them right now...

I was just reading something somewhere that said AMD is on par with Intel in the server market. I dont see how, but I guess they could be. They have been focusing on the server market more latley, and have been doing well there.

AMD still covers a fair market share thanks to their hold in the server market through corps like sun. however, they are still relatively small compared to Intel's hold.

good for AMD.. Have Sun ever used Intel Chips?
It's might just be an anti "wintel" strategic move. |
