Building a Stratum-1 GPS Based NTP Server with a Soekris net4501

Here's a fun little article I wrote on building a Stratum-1 NTP Server with an embedded x86 based computer. It is a complete 180 from the usual quad-core gigahertz tri-sli terabyte madness that we all seem to be caught up in. I wanted to (hopefully) show people that bigger is not always better.

This article could of gone on for many, many pages, but I tried to sum up the high-points and give people ideas for their own little similar projects.
If you are reading this, the first thing you might be asking yourself is... What the heck is NTP? The shortest and simplest answer I can give is: NTP stands for Network Time Protocol, which is a protocol for computers to synchronize their clocks with each other over a network. Building your own GPS based NTP server can be done on the cheap for well under $200.
On a side note, I've also used several 300MHz Geode GX-1 embedded PCs for NTP servers, routers, and other networking appliances too. Those seem to be the most widely available as surplus on eBay if you you do some digging. You can find a lot of old Neoware clients that can run from a CF card, also Advantech makes a lot of embedded stuff.

Enjoy!

This reminds me of the guy who did his own relativity experiment with atomic clocks he found on ebay.

Very interesting read. Although it would be way over my head, I wouldn't mind seeing the software portion of this build.

Wow, really cool. Though my FREESCO-based router box automatically syncs to pool.ntp.org. But i'd sure wish every clock in the house synced to it.

I actually have an old Dell TrueMobile router w/OpenWRT on it. NTPD is running (syncs to this box actually) and the machines on the LAN sync to it...

I wish more router's had built in NTP servers, it would make better sense to let local machines sync to your router.

zlander - Have you seen Project GREAT: General Relativity Einstein/Essen Anniversary Test?? It's pretty interesting.
