Will Microsoft still activate new XP installations?

According to a Microsoft representative, you will be able to activate new XP installations for the foreseeable future. The fact that the company longer sells XP "has no bearing on one's ability to activate XP installations..." Of course, the current rules about moving a Windows installation from one PC to another will still apply:

You can only do this with a retail version of Windows. The copy of XP that came with your computer stays with your computer. You must remove Windows from the old computer. Automatic activation will fail on the new computer. When that happens, call the toll-free number displayed on the screen and explain your situation to a human being. They will help you manually activate XP.

hit up the automated activation system they give you a number for if the activation fails. I've never had any issues not only getting xp to activate, but 2k3 as well.

I'm sure they'll continue to activate until long after the bulk of pc's are still running xp.

Christ on a crutch

I've got a "ship of Theseus" machine. I've been facing this problem since my first blown motherboard (from my first bad power supply).

At this point, the only part left from my original machine is my DVD drive.

I guess MS thinks if you swap motherboards (even retaining the same CPU and RAM...and even if it's the same MODEL motherboard) it isn't the same computer anymore.

You know what I will do when MS disables activation (assuming I haven't moved on by then)? Pirate, or apply some sort of crack. If they don't like it, I'll write my serial number on my ***** and they can come suck it off.

I just installed XP on my computer and had no problems with activation. I would only be worried when I try to activate it after windows 7.

/me crosses fingers in hope that Win7 will be what M$ says it will be.

Like everyone says, simply just call up Microsoft and you'll be activated in no time.
