IE8's InPrivateBrowsing Feature Announced

SEATTLE (AP) -- The next version of Microsoft Corp.'s Web browser makes it easier for people to surf the Internet without leaving a trace.

Microsoft's latest version of Internet Explorer allows users to search the Web without leaving a trace.

Companies that sell advertisements online -- including Microsoft -- can electronically gather tidbits about Web surfers' habits, and then use that information to help decide what kinds of ads to show.

However, in the newest "beta" test version of Microsoft's forthcoming Internet Explorer 8, which was made available Wednesday, a mode called InPrivateBrowsing lets users surf without having a list of sites they visit get stored on their computers.

How does not having a cookie stored locally keep them from collecting information on you?

Wouldn't increase security at all...

This feature is geared toward situations where say, a friend comes over, and he wants to check his email. He could log into gmail without leaving his own login cookies behind, and without wiping your autologin cookies.

This feature was supposed to be introduced with FF3, but got shunted back because it involves reworked a lot of code. Looks like IE may get it first then. May get it first. Probably not, given the way M$ are. Wish they'd listen to what their users want, rather then just playing catch up & copy with FF/Opera all the time....

Google Chrome has the feature as well ("Incognito"), and is probably better at memory management than IE.
