Dell’s Mini packs Ubuntu, XP; Vodafone to sell it

Very interesting... Looks like something I might get myself for Christmas...

Dell’s Inspiron Mini 9 now available and Dell is pushing the netbook is available on its site. Meanwhile Vodafone is going to sell the Mini in Europe.

While Dell’s move could be viewed as playing catchup to other rivals such as Asus the Vodafone deal is notable. Vodafone says it will sell Dell’s Mini in Europe in a move that was previewed by Michael Dell on Wednesday. Dell said at the Citigroup Technology Conference that telecom carriers will sell netbooks to push 3G services. What U.S. carriers will follow?

The Inspiron Mini (statement) will run $349 with Ubuntu $399 for one with XP. Also as expected Box.net is bundled in with the system. In a nutshell, Dell’s Mini (see Dell’s blog) looks like a lot of netbooks such as the Asus eeePC.

Some specs:
- It weighs 2.28 pounds;
- Has a solid state drive;
- 8.9 inch display;
- Comes with Ubuntu and XP with “custom Dell interface.”

Well I knew this was around....they used to call it the Dell "E"....how original. It honestly looks just like the Asus Eee, I wish they could have come up with something on their own....best praise is being copied I guess. I spec'd out the closest I could find to the Asus 901 20g...and the dell like usual has less in it. I priced one for $501 (with shipping) and it's pretty close to the 901 20G except it has only 16GB of HD and only a 4cell battery, which Dell (after calling them) claims is enough for roughly "2 movies"....whatever that means. So it's about $50 less then the 901 20G and you get less for it.

The Eee already has a 3g section labeled out on their mb. Next gen should have the slot most likely.

Additional Comment:

Well I checked with a dell chat person and the Battery life for this thing is laughable. 3.5 hours XP and 4 hours Ubuntu. So I'd rate this grand dell experience as a C-

hmm looks pretty cool IMO.

I seriously considered an EEE for a while as a home laptop but it's cooling solution put me off. Didn't strike me as something that would last a long time.. plus I was really struggling with the 2-4-8GB SSD options at the time.

Of course I haven't looked at them since the 901 20GB EEE PC came out so it might have a better cooling solution now.... it certainly seems better overall.

Specs look nearly identical to an Aspire One.... I wonder if it is a legitimate SSD, rather than the crap Asus and Acer put in their models.

I agree that the SSD's that Asus puts in their systems are not the best. At least the write times of them are really fast. Installations, opening apps, is much better then even my Raptor. I know that the SSD's in the 901 was far better then the ones they put in the 1000 series

I'd go with an Acer Aspire One if I had my choice of the mini sub notebooks. I like the keyboard and you can expand the storage via one of the SD card slots without opening the sucker up. I have a feeling opening one of these up will make working on a 12 inch Apple G4 iBook seem like fun..

With Quickpwn you can install Cydia to allow you to run unix apps. The underlying base for the iPhone OS is a modified version of OSX that works in the same way, coding exploits for iPhone is very similar to coding for OSX.

Remember that the iPhone isn't a netbook so you can't really compare the two but for those using windows mobile can you install perl?

i have an EEE PC 2gb (gift from my bank) Acer Anspire one (gift from myself) and i like the Acer for the fact that it runs XP (natively) and the 120gb hard drive makes a great system for portable movies and the storage slot is useful if you didn't get 120gb version as it still leaves a valid card reader for other stuff, there also a 5200mha battery out there which should give long run time though it costs a bit

i've looked at the dell but it it failed at the fact that it doesn't have a real hard drive annoys me

The French keyboard is annoying as hell, isn't it.

The whole point of netbooks is the fact that it's run on SSD's. Regular harddrives are annoying. I love the fact that I don't have to worry if I carry my 901 around while it's on, no hd to get damaged. The space is all relative anyways. I agree the eee 2g is crap, all the surf models are kinda junk. The 901/1000 series is much improved and even if you buy the linux version, how hard is it to reformat and put XP? I finally got around to putting a 2.5" drive I had into a enclosure so now I have the 65GB onboard + 250GB on the external.

Nothing, but having to remove the keyboard, hs, touchpad, & 30+ screws just to swap the hard drive is a pain..
