RIAA Wants Search Engines to Censor “Pirate Sites”

In a testimony before Congress on “The Future of Audio” today, RIAA CEO Cary Sherman will stress that more needs to be done to stop online piracy. In particular, search engines such as Google and Bing have to take responsibility and come up with appropriate technological solutions. The RIAA wants these search engines to censor pirate sites from their search results while giving priority to legitimate music services.

14 year olds and non computer literate types.

Don't care for pirating but if the RIAA spoils my searches for pirate related fun on talk like a pirate day, they will be keelhaul!

Started watching One Piece on VizAnime's site. My love of the high seas has be rekindled.

Torrent sites also host non-copyrighted content, like Linux, or other Open Source and Freeware type stuff too. A torrent file itself is only a map or pointer to another file. Not a violation of copyright, and you never know what the torrent points to until you've downloaded the file anyway.

I think they are referencing the rapidshare type sites.

Enter Magnets.

You know making things like untouched isos that much harder to get really grinds my gears (Thanks Peter!).

Basically it says, I want to download the data that matches this hash value. Bittorrent then uses DHT to find other peers that have the same data.

The problem with Magnet links is that you can't select what files you want to download, unlike torrents.

Maniac did a great job answering that. They have better longrun capabilities as well. The bigger the swarm the easier it is to get the hash into memory (no file is actually downloaded). The price comes on the initial upload since the Magnet has to also get into the swarm but that isa small price to pay.

I was able to get the Eval copy of Sql Server 2012 untouched before my MSDN download reached 20% of the exact same ISO. I still have to get VS2012, Windows 8 Server and Windows 8 Evals too (busy year for MS).
