Noctua's active noise cancelling fans.

Coming soon for your PC. Great idea/concept, funny thing is with enthusiast cases using 120mm and larger fans a computer case can be pretty silent even without the noise cancelling fans. I wonder how much improvement they will actually deliver and will it be wroth the extra cost.

read about it at the The Verge.

The idea is deceptively simple: active noise-cancellation involves pairing a sound wave with one of identical amplitude, but inverted phase — the noise and anti-noise effectively cancel each other out. As the magnets in the Noctua prototype react to the band around the fan's frame, the blades vibrate imperceptibly (at about 0.1mm), generating sufficient anti-noise to counteract much of the noise the fan is making.

Pretty cool idea, if I had a noisy system I'd definitely consider the final product providing they do achieve a more compact integrated mic / signal processor design but not at twice the price of the current NF-F12 fan, that would be around $40-$50 per fan...

If they could pull off making Delta's that this works with then I can see the value in it.

Here's hoping that their technology is implemented by the GPU vendors to work on video cards then!

Also, noise cancellation works great. Used the same concept on my car's exhaust to kill drone. Do a search on Helmholtz resonators.
